  • What is a DIY website?

Any website you build yourself would be considered "DIY", however, they are typically characterised by being built into easy to use, drag and drop website editing platforms. Our DIY builder is aimed at the average consumer with no coding experience required. Simply drag, drop, add your content and publish your new website.

  • What is a domain?

Your domain is basically your address on the internet. It's what you might hear people call your 'url' or 'website' address, and is what you type into a website browser to visit a website.

In New Zealand, the most common domain ends in .co.nz, and globally it is .com. You can basically choose any domain that isn't taken by someone else - and it's a great way to make sure you keep a professional image by letting you also host personalised email addresses. You basically 'rent' your domain - purchasing it yearly for a pretty low sum and then using it to point to all your other services.

  • What is hosting?

Hosting covers a range of different services, from email hosting to website hosting and a range in between. At it's most basic, hosting is the storage of files and data on a physical server somewhere in the world. So your 'website hosting' is basically the storage of all the text and images on your website (or in your emails) on a computer server.

  • Can I get any hosting for my website?

As a general rule, different website platforms will need different hosting services, so it's not a 'one size fits all' approach. As an example, our 543 websites have the hosting bundled up with the website editor, so when you build a site with us and publish it, the hosting and security certificates etc are all taken care of. Comparatively, if you have a WordPress site you want hosted, you may need to purchase your own hosting plan and manage the security side of things yourself.

Our DIY domains and hosting service has a range of options available for you to choose based on your unique requirements, however, if you have a question about what you should be grabbing, don't hesitate to contact us.

  • What costs do I need to think about?

When getting online for the first time, there are a few costs to keep in mind:

    • Domain - you'll need this to point to all your hosting services. It's a relatively low cost ($29 - $55 per year).
    • Website Hosting - this will vary in price depending on what type of site you go for, but for example, a multi page informational site with 543 is $365 per year.
    • Email Hosting - if you want custom email addresses you'll need to pay for those. An example of email pricing would be Google Workspace which is $9 per email address/user per month.
    • Design Fees - with our DIY site builder, the design fees are $0, however if you want to grab a professional to help out, then you are looking at $999+.
    • Security Certificate - this can vary, but with 543's builder, the SSL certificate pricing is included with the hosting fee.
